Alice Rynear is showing New Work
Vintage Kimono Silk Scarves
Old
and historic kimonos from Japan
are
recycled and given new life in one-of-a-kind silk scarves.
Lovely
old asian designs are pieced together
with
new silks that I've hand-dyed.
Each
scarf is reversible with contrasting patterns on each side.
I
strive in this new work to bring the essence of Wabi Sabi into my creations
by
re-using fabrics that would otherwise be unappreciated and discarded.
Revering
the fabrics for their age,
their
history and their weathered qualities, cracks and flaws,
gives
each scarf an aesthetic quality of timeless beauty.
That's
Wabi Sabi. It is the elegance of restraint, where less is more,
There
are entrepreneuer ladies in Japan who search kimono markets for material.
They
carefully hand-pick the kimonos apart and sell the fabric.
I'm
pleased to purchase fabric from them and support their lives.
I've completed the following scarves and will post more as I progress.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Purple and rust leaves on one side
and rust and gold overall design with red piecing on the other.
Two completly different scarves in one.
55X6 .... $100
Flower sprays on each end of a deep mauve background,
that is patterned
with japanese style fans, scrolls and blossoms.
The color and patterns are lovely on both sides.
So the scarf isn't pieced. It is soft and
flowing, with a hand rolled hem and self fringe. 56X10
... $100
Medium weight textured fabric with an overall
design of red twigs and flowers.
It is pieced with red crepe silk. It is faced
with a creamy silk and hemp blend.
The hemp blend is soft and smooth and feels
good. 54X6 ... $100
Parallel stripes of brown, tan, green and gold.
Earthy colors that are pieced with tan and green silk.
The reverse is an earthy green charmuese.
The scarf has a soft feel. The kimono fabric is old and fragile.
I cut around many flaws and some flaws are
still there. This scarf must be treated gently with care
to preserve the vintage fabric.
56X6 ... $100
Two black and white scarves. The kimono pieces
are stylized japanese designs on a medium weight
textured fabric. Each is pieced with
black charmuese. One scarf is backed with black charmuese,
and the other is faced with a silvery
fabric that is a blend of hemp and silk. The hemp
is soft and shiny but with more body. It's
interesting and I like it. 54X6 ... $100
Light green, grey, black and white overall
floral design pieced with pink and green. One side
is a light green featuring a small crest on
each end. It's two scarves in one.
58X6 ... $100

Mauve and white flowers at each end, painted
on a light tan crepe silk,
which has delicate flowere embroidered on
it. Pieced both sides with mauve charmuese. 55X6 ... $100
Patchwork design in yellow, gold, orange, brown, green, and blue.
Pieced with brown, gold and indigo
vintage silks. Looks good on blue denim.
6 X 57 A medium weight crinkly silk ... $100

Very sweet. Pale Blue and Pink Blossoms.
Lightweight crepe silk. The reverse is a hand-dyed
pale blue silk chiffon.
5 X 54 ... $100

Peacocks and flowers on indigo
crepe silk, backed with hand-dyed blue textured silk. 5 1/2

Prayer Shawl
Two images from a vintage kimono. Styalized
designs outlined in metallic gold.
They are appliqued at each end of a Thai silk
scarf. The scarf is wine colored printed with a black design.
The overall size is 10 and a half by 64 inches
with a three inch black fringe.
I call it a prayer shawl because that is how
it feels to me.
It could also find good use as an alter cloth,
or just a nice wearable scarf. ... $100

This scene feaures clouds, lakes, mountains,
bamboo and flowers.
The front in a textured medium weight fabric
and the back is from a kimono lining.
The lining is a soft light weight silk that
I dyed tan and rust to match the front.
6 inches by 56 ....
$100

Another scene only this time lined with
a medium weight textured chocolate brown.
6 inches by 53 ....

The vintage kimono silk is a
medium weight classic floral with lots of green and red with other colors
also.
I backed one with handpainted
red crepe silk. The other with a light tan. They could be worn
by men or women. I can see Josseph
wearing the red scarf this winter. They are very warm.
Each one is 6 X
57 inches. ... $100

The kimono silk is black on white
with blue, coral, green and white flowers.
I backed it with blue raw silk
and pieces of coral and black and white.
It is a medium weight scarf
which feels soft and comfortable.
6X57 inches.
... $100

The kimono floral is called Tsumugi,
a plain weave fabric; characterized by hand twisted
silk filaments made from hatched
cocoons; resulting in uneven thickness of yarns.
Produces a pleasant irregular
look suitable for casual wear despite its labor intensive technique.
It's lightweight with a soft
drape patched and backed with handpainted shantung silk.
One is pieced with mauve and
one is pieced with pale yellow. Very summery and stunning.
The predominate color is a deep
wine with pink, red, green and yellow.
6X60 inches ...
$100
A silk crepe. Created by a distinctive
weaving technique. The threads are twisted
while weaving giving it a very
crinkly loosely woven texture. Must simply see and feel to believe.
There are red, green, purple
and blue wavey lines on a dark gold background.
This scarf is all one piece.
10 by 58 inches. ... $100
SORRY SOLD

6 X 59 ... $100
The color is too red on my
monitor. It should be fuschia and mauve, much more pink then it's showing.
The central panel is fuschia on
one side and mauve on the other. The back panels are cut from kimono linings.
The linings are silk and they've
been taken apart and are sold separately in bulk.
I then wash and iron and pick the
threads from the seams. It's very time consuming. After they're
washed, ironed and cut I hand dye
them. I have washed and ironed all the kimono pieces that I use.
They are dye-fast and hand-washable
but I recommend dry-cleaning to be safe.
The two end panels are from vintage
kimonos.
6 X 56 ... wine-red floral is pieced
and backed with hand-dyed shantung silk,
which adds texture and body to
the scarf. Each blossom is embellished with gold ... $100
This is a lovely scarf ! It feels so good !
14 X 60 ... buttery soft white with floral
designs woven into the white.
There are floral paintings on each end. Lots
of gold etching. Hand rolled hem. . . $100
What a difference, but lovely also.

58 X 12 ... butterfly panels on each
end. The white butterflies are woven into a loose lightweight weave.
The center panel is a textured silk. So dark
a navy that it looks black.
The back side is gray chiffon. Striking when
worn with a gray silk top. ... $100
There
is a different pattern on each side of the scarf. It's like having two
different scarves.

I still have this blue jacket in the closet
Jacket ....... Charmeuse
Silk ........$79

What is the process?

First the pattern for the jacket
is outlined on 4 sections of silk :
the front, back, sleeves and
front facing.
In the photo above I've stretched
the two front sections on a frame.
Then I outlined the flowers
using a waterbased marker. The design is then outlined again
using a water based wax resist.
I use a product called presist. Finally I begin to paint,
beginning with a blue background
and then the flowers and leaves.
Each section is steamed for
2 to 3 hours to set the dye. The silk is washed and rinsed thoroughly
so the resist washes out of
the fabric leaving the silk soft and the dye is set.
I iron the fabric and cut the
pattern, then the kimono is ready to sew.

.. Beginning at the base of the spine and moving up the spinal cord ....
Red is stimulating and energizes our physical body and our passions. A commen complaint that people have is lack of energy, or sore lower backs. This is indicating that ones red energy (root chakra) is low. Wear red on Tuesday the Mars day of the week. And feel stronge, courageous, and self-confident.Orange stimulates our sensing and feeling nature. If one feels grouchy or negative then vibrate the Spleen center with orange light and bring joy and enthusiasm to the workday. The Dalai Lama wears saffron and is the happiest and jolliest man on earth, in spite of the problems he must face each day. Wear orange any time you want to happily live life to the fullest.
Yellow is mental energy that illuminates clarity of thought, and increased awareness, stimulating our natural curiosity and perceptions. The Solar Plexus Chakra is governed by the yellow energy. It is where we focus our attention on the flow of ch`i. In Chinese medicine the circulation of ch`i keeps one alive and in good health. Wear yellow on Sunday, or anytime when you want to radiate a sunny disposition.
Green is the healing energy of the heart chakra. It is the energy of Nature, Love and Compassion. Wear green to relax muscles, nerves and thouhts and when you want feelings of renewal, peace and harmony. Green won't help you to be assertive and decisive and say, "NO." It's the color of adaptability. You don't see lady senators wearing green, they're usually in red or blue.
Blue brings energy to ones creative self expression and harmony to speech and voice. Do you feel any stress in in your mouth, jaw, throat, neck and shoulders? Place a blue scarf around your throat chakra and relax those areas. Blue is a good color for hyper-active children. A true blue person is loyal, tactful, affectionate, inspiring and wise.
Indigo Is truly a psychic color that connects us to metaphysical realities. We can wrap ourselves in indigo when we want to see with our inner eye and be attuned to dreams and spiritual truth. Indigo is not a good color if one is feeling mentally or emotionaly confused or depressed as it also related to the unconsious realms.
Violet purifies our body, thoughts and feelings by raising our energy up to the crown chakra and the highest spiritual levels where we're attuned to beauty, creativity and inspiration. Wear violet for extrasensory perception, to rise above everyday material stresses and strains.
